Break-even calculator
Estimate how many sales cover your costs, explore expected profit or loss, and work toward a target profit.
Your sales scenario
Use one currency throughout. No exchange conversion.
Changing the period relabels the scenario. Update amounts and sales to match; they are not converted automatically.
Your break-even sales target
67 units per month
USD 1,675.00 in revenue
At this whole-unit sales volume, estimated profit is USD 5.00. The sales count is rounded up to avoid a loss.
At 100 expected sales per month
Expected revenue
USD 2,500.00
Expected total costs
USD 2,000.00
Estimated profit
USD 500.00
To earn at least USD 500.00 in profit
Sell at least 100 units per month
At that volume, estimated revenue is USD 2,500.00 and profit is USD 500.00.
What each sale contributes
USD 15.00 per unit
Each sale leaves USD 15.00 after variable costs to cover fixed costs, then contribute toward profit.
This assumes the same selling price and variable cost for every unit, with fixed costs unchanged across the modeled sales range. It is not a sales forecast.
Sales-volume comparison
Selected volumes include zero sales, expected sales, and supported break-even and target-profit checkpoints. All figures use the same period.
| Units sold | Revenue | Total costs | Profit / loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | USD 0.00 | USD 1,000.00 | -USD 1,000.00 |
| 66 | USD 1,650.00 | USD 1,660.00 | -USD 10.00 |
| 67 | USD 1,675.00 | USD 1,670.00 | USD 5.00 |
| 68 | USD 1,700.00 | USD 1,680.00 | USD 20.00 |
| 100 | USD 2,500.00 | USD 2,000.00 | USD 500.00 |
Assumptions and limitations
This model represents one product or service with constant selling price and variable cost per unit. Fixed costs remain constant within the modeled volume range. All fixed costs, expected unit sales, and target profit must refer to the same period.
Contribution per unit = selling price − variable cost. Where contribution is positive, whole units needed for no loss = ceiling(fixed costs ÷ contribution). Units for a profit target = ceiling((fixed costs + target profit) ÷ contribution). Rounding up may produce profit above the exact break-even point.
Profit = units sold × contribution − fixed costs. If contribution is zero or negative, sales cannot recover positive fixed costs. If fixed costs are zero, zero sales produce no loss even when additional sales are unprofitable.
Enter variable costs such as materials, packaging, and per-sale fees in the per-unit amount. Include appropriate fixed costs separately. Do not double-count costs. All modeled units are assumed sold at the same price.
The model does not automatically calculate taxes, financing, owner compensation, inventory changes, discounts, refunds, capacity limits, mixed products, or stepped costs. Include relevant costs in your inputs where appropriate; estimated profit is not necessarily cash available to withdraw.
Input amounts are limited to 100,000,000 and expected sales to 1,000,000 whole units. Requirements above the supported sales range are flagged. Currency minor-unit arithmetic is used and scenarios outside exact integer limits are not displayed.
Currency selection does not convert amounts. Changing the period only relabels the scenario. Inputs remain in page state and reset on refresh; they are not saved to an account or database.
